Let’s Talk Data Change Management
Change Management theory has been around for over 4 decades. It is taught in business seminars, MBA programs, and executive retreats all over the world. Changes Management centers on the idea that there are effective processes, tools, and techniques that can assist individuals, teams, and organizations in making systematic changes within their organizations. There’s even a Certified Change Management Professional (CCMP) designation. To say its adoption across every industry in the world of business has been successful is an understatement!
Can we say the same thing when it comes to implementing changes to data culture? We hear from business leaders the constant need to improve the data within their companies to stay competitive, or to innovate, or to keep up with the latest consumer trends. But how hard is it to implement the necessary changes to achieve improved data capabilities? What tools can be borrowed to help create and deploy the data sources, ELT flows, and visualizations that will not only be effective mediums for decision making, but also be adopted and used by those who must make those decisions.
In this talk we will discuss how popular change management techniques can be adapted to the data environments of our workplaces, examine some examples of successful initiatives, and counter those successes with some common pitfalls and challenges that can stall our desires to bring beneficial data culture changes to our organizations.

Carter's data career has seen three unique stages. The first began by looking through the campus telescope to capture digital images of the Pleiades globular cluster. Through data acquisition, processing, and interpretation the world of data exploration had been revealed. Astrophysics gave way to geophysics, where terabytes of seismic data exposed him to the concepts of cross-correlation, signal deconvolution, Fourier transforms, and data cross-plotting to help illuminate the quality and quantity of potential hydrocarbon traps. After obtaining his MBA in entrepreneurship, Carter joined WestJet in 2018 where he applied SQL, R, and Tableau on the Revenue Analytics and Schedule Planning. Recently, he joined Chatters Limited Partnership as a Business Intelligence Engineer. His goal is to always make data mean business.
